It’s September, which means a few very exciting things. Not only is it time to consume pumpkin spice everything (immediately), it’s also socially acceptable to start listening to Christmas music, which means starting to dream up your holiday parties is a must.
As we look ahead into the holiday season, here are the trends big and small that could play an exciting role in your get-togethers this year.
Canon, Seattle based bar brands their orange peels
NY-based Dante brands their cubes
Swanky Aviary in Chicago revives an old idea branding their coasters in an eye-catching way.
Cocktails as Branding. Of course, we're all already on the craft cocktail train, but this year is all about the cubes and colors. Cubes that light up with a brand's unique colors or ice cut into shapes or letters will be all the rage. Garnishes that play off the theme, or laser-etched brand names will adorn the branded masterpiece.
While on the topic of cocktails, we foresee coffee-driven cocktails and alternately, lower ABV (alcohol by volume) cocktails trending come holiday time, which make a lot of sense if you ask us. Who doesn't loathe a hangover?
Velvet. This luxe fabric, long associated with grandma’s couch, but deep in our hearts at OTR, is making a splash this winter. Consider allowing velvet to sit center stage in your party decor, letting warm and cozy vibes set the tone. Sure, velvet curtains and throw pillows are a must, but consider wrapping vases or creating accent decor, like these plush trees, out of velvet. We love deep, unexpected colors like plum and emerald green. Beware, velvet can be tricky to work with, so here are some great insider tips.
Velvet also is a must-wear for fall '16, so splurge on a velvet blazer to stay on-trend.
The 1990s. It’s hard to believe that the 90s were long enough ago that this decade is now considered a throwback, but alas, it’s true. On the runway for Fall/Winter 2016, the 90s influence was everywhere. Just check out this post by Elle.com to see the undeniable influence. Are we advocating a full-on 90s themed party? Probably not. But we welcome subtle nods. Consider a 90s playlist or nostalgic accents. We love the idea of throwing it back by using a simple, dark palate and fun touches like Lisa Frank notebooks and stickers, Blow Pops, Ring Pops, and even some Pixie Sticks. Snap bracelets for guests as name badges, anyone?

Fall/Winter 2016 Colors.Pantone has predicted to be big We get it, holidays. You all have your standard colors. Halloween: orange. Thanksgiving: gold, orange, red, yellow. Christmas: red and green. New Years: blue and silver. Bleh. This is why, at OTR, we rely heavily on Pantone’s color reports. When planning this year’s holiday events, take a peek at the colors . We are especially excited to work with sharkskin and dusty cedar this season.
Custom Snapchat Geofilters. Everyone (except for Danielle) has snapchat, and events are ready to embrace the latest. . .custom geofilters! No need for everyone to be a dog or flower child when companies can brand and specialize now easily, with the platform Snapchat rolled out, or, with a company like this one.
Say it with Stairs. There is always unused space at events, and rarely do we see entrances (or exits) being utilized to their full potential. Whether you direct, or purely wow, using your stairs will surely get heads turning. First impressions are everything, people!
