I don’t think it’s any secret (mainly because we love to shout it from the rooftops) that OTR loves flowers. In a recent post, we broke down great ways to DIY the perfect arrangement for your event, but what if you want to take things a step further?
We all know that certain flowers are typically used to convey specific messages, like red roses to communicate love and lilies to indicate mourning. But did you know that flowers (and plants in general) nearly all have deeper meanings tied to them? This concept, inspiration for popular novel The Language of Flowers, means that you can use your arrangements to tell a story. Remember, you can go as big or as small with this as you want. You can put together entire arrangements filled with flowers that fit the theme, choose one or two meaningful accent flowers that add a subtle nod to your messaging, or simply choose to add a few potted “friends” to tablescapes to quietly punctuate your event’s message. Here are OTR’s favorite flowers and plants to add to events, and some great reasons why.
Blog Launch, Book Signing, or Record Release Parties
If you, a friend, or a client are celebrating one of these milestones, it’s a pretty big deal. These creative endeavors mean time and a whole lot of creative energy spent. For occasions like this, you want to highlight creativity, well-earned accomplishments, and luck.
Such a powerful flower, this beauty stands for passion, creativity, and protection. These orange, cream, gold beauties are perfect in fall arrangements against browns, reds, and greens, or can be dressed up for spring against vibrant pinks and purples.
Best known as a romantic (or bridal) flower, roses are actually really versatile flowers. Different colored roses take on different meanings. A yellow rose signifies “congratulations,” and is perfect as the star of an arrangement.
Your perfect filler flower, these bell-shaped green beauties wish others the luck of the Irish in their endeavors. Their light, refreshing scent makes them non-invasive, but subtly attention-grabbing.
A baby is on the way! Yep, you’re probably obligated to do some of the cheesy stuff, but it’s always great to do something special. Soon-to-be mommas hear a lot of negative stuff. Why not use flowers to deliver a some positive thoughts? Call out momma's smile, her loveliness, and her maternal love with these blooms
This beautiful, billowy plant’s symbolism perfectly captures the meaning of the day. We love tablescapes featuring succulents and lower, shorter buds. Moss is the perfect addition to these subtle, non-intrusive arrangements
With a beautiful message to communicate, these tiny buds are perfect accents in any arrangement. Also perfect as a potted gift, these flowers say you’re excited for the memories that will be made in this new space.
A potted fern is a great housewarming gift. Not only does it symbolize the wishes you have for them in their new home, but allows you to offer them something that will grow with them in their new space.
We all love a birthday celebration, but we all hate the cliche crap that comes along with a birthday. Why not forego the balloons and add an organic dose of happy? Instead, communicate playfulness, cheer, and a whole lot of love through pops of plant life.
A great alternative to the black balloons and stuffy “over the hill” messaging, this symbol of endurance is filled with positivity. If you choose to use a cactus in an arrangement of succulents, just beware of the pricklies!
