We know, we know, it's not something you really say, but there are certain things that just scream "MAN!" And what better way to celebrate all that is cliche than with a big ole' party that teaches partygoers manly skills--kinda like a one night stint at summer camp? With businesses, websites, podcasts and events popping up all over the place capitalizing on this trend, why not saddle up and throw a "man" party of your very own?
Although the #1 goal of this party is to have fun, a close second is to teach partygoers some skills that will stick with them when they leave. You can get as creative as enlisting a local mechanic to demonstrate an oil change or as basic as building cocktails, but an event that ramps up from simple skills to more difficult is what you want to aim for.How ambitious you get with it is up to you! As a bonus, we love to toss in a healthy dose of competition, encouraging guests to get their hands dirty and throw down to encourage lots of laughter. Here are some of OTR's favorite activities for a party fit for a king.
Taste. Sure, we all love a cocktail, but not many of us really know what makes something good or even how to identify different flavors present in something we taste. A whiskey tasting combines the joy of drinking whiskey with the excitement of learning a new skill. Basic knowledge about whiskey gives guests a great knowledge base they can use to impress friends at a bar or to build cocktails of their very own. Whiskey too hardcore? A beer tasting would work great too. Consider checking out one type of brew (IPA, Blonde Ale, American Amber Ale) from several breweries, or even different brews from the same brewery! Need ideas? Check out our recent post on #trending cocktails.
Eat. If you're going to have a man party, you've gotta bring the meat, so we say, let them eat STEAK! This is the perfect chance for a tutorial on cooking meat to perfection. If you have a large grill, a demonstration in front of guests works well, especially teaching the hand method for measuring doneness. Got a little cash to burn? Supplying individual small grills lets guests get hands on and happy!
Survive. Survival techniques are fantastic to teach and can even turn into a fun competition later in the evening. Knot tying, shelter building, or even fire starting are easy skills to master and can even foster teamwork if you're interested in getting guests to collaborate. Feeling fancy? Supply a flint and fire starter and teach fire building before dinner and let guests build the fire they'll cook their steaks on!
Play. Finish the activities off with some touch football, and offer a quick "rules and regs" rundown session for anyone who is willing to admit that the rules escape them. Don't have room for football? Card games, like poker or gin rummy, are stationary and easy to master. Bonus? Stock up on lemons, limes, berries, mint, and simple syrup and let guests build their own whiskey cocktails to sip while playing.
You know what we love most about a man party? To keep things simple, all of these are skills you can master yourself, then teach partygoers, but if you want to get fancy, you have options. Local business owners may be willing to participate just for the free advertising, so don't be shy and reach out to anyone who might be a good fit. Need ideas? Check out The Art of Manliness!
Remember, the goal of the man party isn't to exclude women, it's really to have fun and educate at the same time. So roll up your sleeves and get to work on a party your guests won't forget!
