Everyone is entitled to their own opinion, but I find it hard to believe that fall doesn’t sit atop the list of favorite seasons for everyone. After all, it’s so nice they named it twice (autumn is also the MOST beautiful season name, is it not?) So when I finally felt that chill in the air at the end of a sunshiny day, I knew it was time to jump straight into the proverbial pile of leaves and celebrate a fresh fall the way it deserves to be celebrated. Here’s what I’m loving right now:
Read: A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man
Something about the chilly evenings and cozy mornings makes me nostalgic, so every fall I decide to pick a classic to dive into. This month’s pick: The James Joyce novel I’ve been meaning to read for years. There’s something fresh about entering another world and following along with a character’s identity awakening that jolts me back to my own self-identification journey. Looking for a classic to read? Here’s a great list. Or, if you’re not feeling like going back in time, there are plenty of new reads that will help you enjoy the falling leaves with your pumpkin spice latte on a crisp Saturday morning.
Listen: Passenger’s Young As the Morning, Old As the Sea
I’ve been a major Passenger fan for a long time now. Back in the days that ‘Let It Go’ dominated the airwaves, I delved into the other songs on his albums and was rewarded with the most poetic music I’ve ever heard. This guy doesn’t have just a brilliant, musky voice and some mad guitar skills—he has incomparable lyric writing abilities. Case in point: his newest album is full of the wistful tunes that fans have grown to know and cherish. You don’t have to go beyond the title track to find yourself transported around the world in a musical wanderlust experience (I wanna rest my bones in the Spanish sunshine / The Italian coastline is calling me / To be free as the birds that fly past me). Swooooon.
Eat: Honeycrisp apples
I don’t care if it’s cliché to plan a trip to the apple orchard as soon as the weather drops below 70. There’s nothing better than the crisp, sweet taste of a fresh apple in the fall, and fruit lovers pretty much unanimously agree that the Honeycrisp is the champagne of all apples. Not into the fresh picks on their own? Maybe you’ll be more on board with a gorgeous apple tart or cinnamon apple fritters.
Learn: Election 2016
Let’s be honest: the news of this year’s election isn’t exactly the easiest to follow. The race to the presidency has become vindictive, complicated, and uncharacteristic of American values. But no matter how challenging it is, being a part of this election is more important than ever—and being knowledgeable about what’s at stake is by and far the key.
If you haven’t yet, do yourself a favor and sign up for the Skimm. It’s pretty much the easiest way to know what’s going on with the election and it only takes a few minutes out of your morning routine. Looking for more? The New York Times updates this ‘what you need to know’ site pretty much constantly.
Style: Mock turtlenecks
My elementary-school self would cringe, but this 90’s trend is back and better than ever. There’s simply nothing more classic than a black mock-turtleneck and jeans for the fall. Besides, it’s probably the easiest it’ll ever be to feeling as stylishly chic as Olivia Palermo.
