Let's all just be honest for a second. There's at least one day every fall where we drink pumpkin spice lattes, eat pumpkin muffins, light pumpkin spice candles, and carve pumpkins. Sure, this might only be one day, but it's a totally glorious day, even if it is still slightly warmer than we'd like considering how committed we are to wearing a wool sweater and matching socks. But before you get out all your supplies and start hacking a traditional jack-o-lantern face into your perfect pumpkin, check out some of our favorite, non-cliche ways to harness the power of the pumpkin.
Play with pattern. Henna is typically saved for the hands, right? Well, this season, how about putting your henna where your pumpkin is? You can use regular Sharpie markers for this, or you can go big like Free People suggests here and get adventurous with a soldering iron, creating a look that illuminates subtly. Henna designs can be free-handed or, to simplify things, you can grab stencils on Amazon. Just pop a bright LED tea light into the pumpkin when your design is ready to shine, or, if you've chosen not to hollow your pumpkin out, simply show it off in the sunlight.
Drill baby, drill! Using your household drill, you can create an awesome carved creation that casts enough light to actually be functional. Be sure to scrape the inside of your pumpkins clean, then use your drill to make holes of varying sizes on all sides of the pumpkin, in patterns if desired. You can use high-gloss spray paint to finish the lanterns to match your theme, or simply let them be for a perfect fall look. Pop in a bright LED candle at party time and use the lanterns to line pathways or to decorate tablescapes adding a pop of light to illuminate tasty treats. Need some pointers? Go bold with branding. You know we love branding at OTR, so of course we have to tell you about how to use your pumpkins to boast your brand. Companies like Maniac Pumpkin Carvers (their work showcased above) will actually custom carve a pumpkin for you, taking your logo, tagline, or even an intricate image and carving it into a pumpkin. You can use these awesome creations for a seasonally-appropriate twist on branding at an event or in a retail space, or even to (pumpkin) spice up your office decorations without the headache.
Function over fashion. The awesome thing is that there are just as many functional things to do with pumpkins as there are fun things. We love putting pumpkins to work as useful parts of a tablescape or decor. A hollowed out pumpkin makes an awesome vessel for bunches of fall flowers, or even a perfect soup tureen for steaming squash bisque. A pumpkin also doubles as a punch bowl for chilly spiced cider spiked with plenty of rum! You can even consider painting or carving pumpkins with arrows or directions leading the way to drinks or a decadent dessert bar!
